Index Send us your tip idea Using screen readers and JAWS scripts with SecureCRT® Screen readers are indispensable tools for the computer user or IT professional who is visually impaired or blind. SecureCRT is compatible with a variety of screen readers, such as Freedom Scientific's JAWS and GW Micro's Window-Eyes. You can optimize your screen reader's behavior with SecureCRT using scripts. This tip discusses the JAWS scripting capability, and provides sample JAWS scripts that can help you make the most of your SecureCRT work environment. Without scripts, JAWS automatically speaks the SecureCRT menus and controls when you use them. In order for JAWS to speak the text inside the emulation window, the JAWS echo text setting must be set to "ALL", which causes JAWS to speak all text that has changed or is new on your computer screen. This can be distracting since you hear content that might be extraneous, such as the announcement of the clock change every minute. To customize how the terminal emulation window text is spoken, Harald van Breederode, a DBA trainer at Oracle Nederland BV, wrote a group of scripts that let you be more selective about what information the screen reader speaks and ignores. The main function in the scripts is the NewTextEvent function, which is called by JAWS whenever the content of the computer screen changes and determines what is spoken. The NewTextEvent function re-sends all screen text when the screen contents get refreshed, for example, when you switch sessions or when you ALT+TAB back into SecureCRT. By default, the example scripts tell JAWS to speak new text that appears in the emulation window. This echoing can be toggled by pressing the JAWSKey+X. The script announces itself whenever SecureCRT is launched and announces the session title whenever you switch sessions with CTRL+TAB and when you ALT+TAB into SecureCRT. Pressing JAWSKey+H gives an overview of the hotkeys used within the scripts. If you need to re-read screen contents, you can walk with the JAWS cursor and the screen will scroll up and down as needed. Below you'll find links to these documented JAWS script files for use with SecureCRT. One set of the scripts have been packaged with a program called JawsScripteXchange, a self-extracting executable. Just double-click on the executable file to install the scripts in the correct directories. A ReadMe file will be displayed after the installation is complete. A WinZip file containing the scripts is also provided, if you prefer a manual installation. After downloading the zip file, extract the scripts to your JAWS \\settings\\enu directory. If you are not familiar with JAWS scripting, you should first review the JAWS Basics of Scripting Manual. You will also want to make sure that the SecureCRT Global Options are configured for the greatest accessibility by following these steps: Open the SecureCRT program window and press ALT+O for Options, then G for Global Options. Move to the Default Session item in the tree of available option groups. Press ALT+D to activate the "Edit default settings" button. Navigate to the Appearance item in the tree of session options groups. Press ALT+Y to move to the "Cursor style" combo box and make sure that "Vertical Bar" is selected. Activate the OK button by hitting the carriage return. Press Y to apply the changes in the default settings to all of your existing sessions settings, or press N to only apply the changes to the current and future session settings. Navigate to the Terminal/Appearance item in the tree of option groups. Press ALT+K and ensure that the "Use trackable insertion caret" check box is checked. Activate the OK button to close the options dialog. Press ALT+O for Options, then N to "Save settings now". This step is not required, but ensures that changes will be applied. Send an e-mail to the SnowMan specifying which scripts you would like to obtain, the version of JAWS you are presently running, and your jaws serial number. The serial number is used to prevent piracy. We will send you an invoice via ProPay which consists of an e-mail message with a link to a secure web site where you can enter your credit card information. When the transaction is complete, we will send your scripts via e-mail attachment. Do not send us your credit card information via E-mail. Write to TheSnowman@SnowManRadio.com. I found that too often they were put down and ostracised from society, my definition of friendship is someone who accepts another person for who they are and not what theyre expected to be. It has been my aim to provide a good friendly and warm community for not only people with vision impairments but for anyone to chat and share there lives, a community of people that are willing to kick in and help someone out when they need it. From spending 3hours with someone on voice chat explaining how to use a program to burning a cd and sending it to a dial-up user in another country. Gestures you would expect from mates but get from good people jus wanting to make honest friends online. The website may not be fancy but the message gets across, it wont look pretty coz frankly I have 3% sight and asthetics arent big on my list. took me long enough to work with my lovely sister to get these colours right. Some of the resources have descriptions accompanying them. The resources include music download sites and programs to convert material into formats acceptable by accessible portable media devices. Unlike other sections of this site, the links for each resource are included with the specific section. Juice Podcatching Client Download Juice for managing podcasts. Juice is a first class Podcast Receiver which is highly accessible. Indeed it is due to the fact that it is so accessible that the iTunes scripts for JAWS no longer support obtaining Podcasts. Juice will allow you to download Podcasts into a specific folder of your choice or it can integrate them into iTunes. Each Podcast is downloaded into your iTunes Library, with each Podcast feed being included within a separate iTunes playlist. Within the File menu of Juice, select Preferences, then the Player Property Sheet. Specify iTunes as the default player for Podcasts. Download the Juice scripts for JAWS written by Debbie Scales. The scripts assist a person in using the scheduling part of the program. Listen to Dean Martineau's tutorial concerning how to use Juice, originally published within Sound Computing Magazine; a journal which is highly recommended. Sound Taxi Audio File Conversion Utility Download and purchase Sound Taxi, a utility which converts Audible and dRM content such as music available from Napster to MP3 format. Please note that a subscription to the protected service is required for this utility to function, so you must legally purchase the content first. You can download JAWS scripts for Sound Taxi. The scripts are very easy to use. Just press the ALT key to activate the special virtual menu bar, and arrow right and left to hear the options with the shortcut keys. Pressing Enter on an item from the menu bar will select the required action, or once you become used to them, you can use the shortcut keys. Hotkey Help is available by pressing Insert+H. You can enable or disable a special percentage count which is present as and when files are being converted. You can if necessary switch to another application and return to Sound Taxi whereupon the percentage count, if enabled, will resume. This setting is retained across Windows sessions. The JAWS scripts function only with JAWS version 8.0 Build 2173. Audible Books The audible UK web site and Audible US site allow you to download popular books either individually or as part of a monthly payment plan. The payment plans enable you to take advantage of a specific number of books each month for a set fee without incurring an additional charge. Audible books are encased within a special file format with four compression rates, with format 1 being the poorest quality and format 4 the highest. The Victor reader Stream is likely in the near future to contain support for Audible books. The Zen stone mentioned in these pages can accommodate Audible books up to and including format 3 which equates to the support given by the PAC Mate. The Book Courier and Book Port can play books up to and including format 4. Please refer to other sections of this site for more details. Anna Dresner produced an excellent audio presentation on this subject. Replay A V Internet Audio Stream Recorder Replay A V is an extremely useful utility for recording internet audio streams, such as radio stations, and converting the content into any one of a variety of file types and sampling rates. Best of all, you can schedule when the recording should begin and end, together with the frequency of recording such as daily. Replay A V is extremely accessible and easy to use. Included within the program is an HTML Finder. You commence the HTML Finder, browse to the web site containing the audio, and Replay will find it and allow you to start an immediate recording or schedule it. The YouSendIt plug-in will allow you to have the recorded program immediately Emailed to an individual or group of people. However unlike the main program, this plug-in delivers some accessibility challenges. JAWS scripts written by me exist to deal with these challenges. ALT+A accepts the licence agreement when the plug-in is first used, ALT+D declines the agreement and ALT+V places the agreement into the virtual viewer for reading with the arrow keys. Under normal circumstances, when entering a YouSendIt screen from Replay, the scripts will automatically activate the virtual cursor so the screen can be read like a web page. To send a file from your local hard disk by Email, please do the following: When the web page is loaded, use the arrow keys to browse to the Email address field and press "Enter". JAWS says "forms mode on". Type the Email address to which you would like to send the file. If there is more than one, you should separate each of them with a semi-colon character. Press "Tab", and type a message which is optional. Press "Tab" to the "Browse" button and press "Enter". This is a standard Open/Browse dialog, so locate the file you wish to send and press "Enter". You have now returned to the web page. If you explore it, you will see your file listed underneath the message text. If for whatever reason the virtual cursor has not activated, use "ALT+Tab" to focus away from YouSendIt, then "ALT+Tab" back to it although I have tried to compensate for this. Use the arrow keys to locate the message edit field and press "Enter". Press "Tab" once. You will hear "Browse" button. Press "Tab" again and you will hear "Send Button". Press "Enter". If you examine the web page, you will hear that the web page now verifies the fact that the file is being sent. Please check out Petro's Podcasts which teach you how to use this very accessible application. DVD Audio extractor DVD Audio Extractor, as the name suggests, is a program for the purpose of extracting the contents of DVD titles into a more suitable form for listening on portable media devices, such as MP3. The program is extremely accessible using many screen-readers with no special configuration or script files required. When a DVD is inserted into the DVD drive of your computer, and the DVD audio extractor program launched, you are presented with a list of titles displayed on the disc. One title may be available for the main movie, another for an audio described version of the same movie, another for a documentary concerning the making of the film, etc. Simply ensuring the relevant title is checked with the Space Bar will allow you to play the title or convert it to an audio format. A thirty day fully functional demonstration copy is available from the manufacturer's web site, after which a small purchase price is required. Sites for Music Downloading The following sites work well with screen-readers. Important Note! These scripts are no longer being maintained and may not work with later versions of Jaws. If anyone is interested in continuing on with maintaining them, please send me an email to: mick@kulgan.net Table of contents Introduction Features What versions of what work with what? Download Installation Contact info Introduction These are the JFW scripts for Adobe Audition. To learn about Adobe Audition itself, please visit: The Adobe Audition home page Adobe Audition, previously known as Cool Edit Pro, is a very nice sound editing and multi-track package. And it may look very nice and friendly to sighties, but for blindies its not so accessible. But if you are blind, and Jaws for Windows is the screen reader you tend to use, then these scripts are for you. Features Some of the features of the scripts are: Find out the current edit cursor, play cursor, and view range times Have times spoken in either: Printed form e.g. 00:03:10:22 Descriptive form e.g. 3 minutes, 10 seconds, 22 miliseconds Positional form e.g. beginning, end Have the name of a cue marker spoken when jumping to it The ability to navigate all the toolbars Access to the selection/view controls Have major statis changes spoken automatically e.g. when audition stops playing/recording Be able to use the track view: Navigate up and down tracks Navigate left and right through each track's fields Access the context menu for each wave block Check and set the statis for such fields as mute, solo and record What versions work with what? Currently, These scripts will work with Adobe Audition 1.0 and 1.5. How ever, These scripts will only work with JFW 5.1 and above for the reason they use certain window messaging functions that are used to pass information to and from Adobe Audition and Jaws, which were only introduced in to Jaws around 5.1. There is also a bug when using the scripts with Adobe Audition 1.5. This bug is either to do with Audition, or Jaws, but we can safely say it is not to do with the scripts. You may find that when Audition 1.5 has focus, then you alt-tab away and back again the scripts will not load. This is because Jaws can't even seem to tell that Audition is in fact the program with focus. The only way to get around this is to make a script in your default script file that simply has the line: switchToConfiguration("audition") Download To download the current version of the scripts, or to view any documentation that is available for them, please follow the links directly below. If you want access to versions before the current one, please check out the archive JFW Audition 20050117-1 scripts (zip file) Changes file Installation Some versions of these scripts will come in a nice installer you can run and answer any questions it asks and the scripts will pretty much get installed automatically. How ever, for versions that only come as a zip file, please unzip the file and copy all the files inside to your JFW settings directory. For example: C:\\program files\\jaws510\\settings\\enu. You will also have to open both audition.jss and audtips.jss separately in JFW script manager and press control+s to re-compile them. Also in Adobe Audition you may have to check/uncheck a few things in the menus to get the scripts to work well, please read audition_readme.txt to find out more about this. Contact info If you have any questions or suggestions about the scripts, please feel free to email any of the authors, contact details can be found in the readme of the zip archive. We are all happy to answer any questions to do with the scripts, but please try not to email us with questions simply about Adobe Audition or sound editing, we all have other jobs and don't really have the time to answer them.");s1[15]=new Array("http://www.kulgan.net/jfwtechnical/","JFWTechnical scripts for Jaws For Windows","","JFWTechnical (The bloated Jaws For Windows Test Script) Latest version: 20060418 Author: Michael Curran Contents Features Installation Download Documentation Bugs and suggestions Features JFW Technical is a set of scripts built around the Jaws vertual buffer that allows a scripter to explorer the application they are scripting for and find out very detailed information that Jaws can retrieve from it. The different categories of information are: Window information: Navigate the application by windows and find out about the name, text, coordinates, class, type, control ID, handle, style bits etc of each window. MSAA object info: Navigate the application using MSAA objects and their simple elements and find out name, value, description, state, state text, role, role text, coordinates etc of each object or simple element. NavModule info: Navigate, and find out info about, the application using the current JFW navigation module. This is used for Java applications. This is still not complete yet. Screen text information: Navigate the application textually with movements such as nextCharacter, nextWord, next line, nextSentence, nextChunk, nextParagraph, nextField etc and find out info such as current character, font, point size, attributes, word, line, chunk, field etc. Restriction (window, real window, app window, none) can be set at the press of a link. Application info: Find out info like current application name, file path, version info etc. Also amount and types of windows for this application. Jaws general info: Find out info such as Jaws paths, language, version etc. Jaws auth info: Find out authorisation scheme, serial number etc. Jaws synth info: Find out the names and drivers of all available synthesizers, find out the available voices, available rate range, pitch range, volume range for the current synthesizer. Jaws cursors info: Find out what cursor is active, and where all the cursors are currently positioned on the screen. System info: Info such as system date, time, language, how long since Windows was started, whether the clipboard contains data. To any advanced scripter, there's nothing special about getting this info, but JFWTechnical can present it all there for you when you want it. No more writing test scripts in all of your applications. JFWTechnical's main interface will remind people very much of a web page in Internet Explorer thanks to the Jaws vertual buffer. Installation JFWTechnical can be installed by copying the files found in the scripts directory in this archive to your jaws settings directory. Then you will need to open default.jss in Script manager and at the top you need to add the line: use "JFWTechnicalLoader.jsb" Save/compile the file. Now you will need to open default.jkm in a text editor and assign a key to call startJFWTechnical. For example: control+shift+j=startJFWTechnical Then save and close the file. To use JFWTechnical, simply go in to the application of your choice, move one of your cursors to where you would like to start, and press the key you mapped to start JFWTechnical. And off you go. Yet even the visually impaired want to enjoy the Word of God and to study the depth of its wisdom and truth. Modern computer technology makes this possible through sophisticated screen reader systems one of which is Jaws for Windows from Freedom Scientific Inc. (formerly Henter-Joyce, Inc.). This system allows a blind user to read the content of the screen in audible form. We have contacted Henter-Joyce to test Theophilos with their system and it has been found compatible with Jaws for Windows (JFW). Many of our users who use this reader system are already enjoying the power and ease of use of Theophilos Bible Software. While there is no additional software necessary to use Theophilos with JFW, its use can be made even more enjoyable with special script files. Theophilos may at first seem a little intimidating with the wealth of functions and options. For this reason we cooperate with technical staff of Henter-Joyce and one of our blind users who created the script and help files that will introduce Theophilos to the visually impaired user and teach him or her to use our software in the most effective way. Please note that you must have Jaws for Windows version 3.2 or higher installed on your computer system to take advantage of these scripts. If you have older version please contact Freedom Scientific Inc. for upgrade. We have been informed from Henter-Joyce, Inc. that a built-in support for Theophilos Bible Software will be a included in future releases of Jaws for Windows. This means that you will be able to enjoy the full power of Theophilos and not worry about the scripts anymore. At this time, Jaws for Windows version 3.7 fully supports the newly released Theophilos 3.0 If you also use an "Open Book Unbound" we offer a new idea for you to use your scanned texts. Scribe for Theophilos authoring software may just be another dimension for sharing your texts with many thousands of users of Theophilos around the globe or in your local church. With Scribe for Theophilos you may convert all your scanned or typed texts to an add-on module for Theophilos. Modules that you create will appear in Theophilos' menu just as any other add-on and you can then take advantage of all features that Theophilos offers. You may exchange your modules with other users of Theophilos, pastor or friends and soon you will have a quite massive library for your enjoyment. If this idea sounds like it could make a difference, download your free trial copy of Scribe for Theophilos and be an author today. For more information about Scribe for Theophilos click here. Much time and effort has been invested by Joseph K. Stephen from Henter-Joyce, Inc., formerly with the Royal Society for the Blind of South Australia and Justin Daubenmire a dedicated JFW script writer and we want to thank both of these devoted men for their programming. Should you experience any problems with these scripts or have any questions concerning their usage, please contact Justin Daubenmire via e-mail at jdaubenm@yahoo.com. Page 3.","","Click me to leave the setup manual back next If you want MonkeyTerm to talk, you need to download an add-on library. The purpose of this library is to provide MonkeyTerm with a way to access JAWS, WindowEyes, and the Microsoft SAPI 5 voice. You can download this self extracting installer by clicking the link below. Click here to download the MonkeyTerm Library Launch the installer and follow the clear on-screen instructions. Again, it is best to leave the path information as the installer suggests. The installer will ask you if you want to use JAWS, WindowEyes, or SAPI 5 as your primary speech synthesiser. Make your choice (I suggest that you do not use SAPI 5 as your primary if you have JAWS or WindowEyes because using the SAPI 5 capability does not provide as much functionality to you as JAWS and Window eyes). If you don't have JAWS or WindowEyes then you will have to use the SAPI 5 option to get the client to talk to you. The software gives you the option of using WindowEyes or JAWS even if you do not have either, so don't let that confuse you. When the installer finishes doing it's job, MonkeyTerm will be a slightly more capable client than before. Wait, don't go yet! That isn't all. You've still got at least 1 file to download.
